The initiative sought a magazine-fed, 5.56mm automatic rifle designed for a single operator, offering improved accuracy, enhanced reliability, and reduced weight compared to belt-fed 5.56mm machine guns. These advantages would improve maneuverability and speed, serving as a complement or replacement for existing squad automatic weapons. Testing and operational use have demonstrated that the IAR is better suited for house-to-house clearing and daily deployment compared to traditional machine guns.
